Hi and recently i brought a toy with catnip in it home and my cat played with it for a little while but has seemed to have lost interest in it which to me i have never experienced with other cats i have had in the past, has any one here else experienced this with their cat?

I think the scent, or whatever it is about cat nop that makes them go crazy, can wear off. I've had that happen with cat toys before. They make a catnip mist you can get in a spray bottle. HTH

They love the actual plants. I remember a cat who would eat the plants. That was when I was a kid back in the early 80s.

Yes, they do love the catnip plants, or even the crushed herb. But the toys do lose their scent, so the cat often loses interest very quickly unless fresh catnip is applied to the toy. Some toys even come with pockets in them that you can open and put fresh catnip in.

I have the mist. My Ragdoll went crazy when I first sprayed it on her tree, but she hasn't been interested any time after that at all.

Two things here:

1. Some cats are less interested in catnip than others. Most cats like it to some extent, at least, but some just...don't care.
2. Your toy may have been brand new, but how long was it sitting in a warehouse, or in a box, or on a shelf before you bought it? It's entirely possible that the smell wore off over time, unless it's a new sort of toy they literally just started producing.
Either way, the way to find out whether your cat likes catnip would be to try that mist or whatnot, or to get hold of some of the crushed herb or plant and see what happens.

It's not just the smell but the catnip itself can act like a drug. Some cats are not affected by it.

I did find a catnip spray but did not buy it as i wasn't sure how it would work or how it is used but will ask next time i'm in the store i get my cats things from and the store is called animates.

Yup, catnip is supposed to be kitty weed, basically. They get stoned from it.

it's really eassy and fun to grow. at one time we had it in a windowbox for our cats. that way I knew it was fresh and good. also, if you buy the fresh that has been previously picked, refrigerating it will lengthen it's effectiveness and life. hope this helps. enjoy your day.
